For beginners, it is always difficult to choose the right Linux distribution. Everybody wants an easy configuration, an everlasting "snap feel", a great stability and extensive information in forums.
Lubuntu Bionic Beaver 18.04 LTS was my first distribution. I have been using it for 3 years. I really liked it. I would like to point out the major reasons, why it is so great!
1. The Ubuntu community is more willing to help, it is more likely to provide you with the required commands.
I started to admire Lubuntu even more when I tried another distribution – Manjaro. After I configured everything in Manjaro, a black screen appeared after login. I could not find the solution, so I gave up on Manjaro.
When I was searching for the solution, I learned that Manjaro people tend to explain everything in a more advanced way, skipping various aspects, which beginners may come up with. For example one of the reasons of why I experienced a black screen, is probably the error of lightdm:
"gkr-pam: unable to locate daemon control file"
The bug is being discussed here.
Within the discussion, one Manjaro user explains:
If you are stuck with this I would recommend changing to a different TTY -> CRTL+ALT+(F1-F7). Log into your account, make backups of all your config files and start removing them one at a time until you find the culprit."
Fine, let's say, it might be helpful for some users. But would it be helpful for beginners? Which "config" files does he mean? I know that he means user files in the directory ~/.config. But would newcomers understand that?
Also Manjaro people discuss the issue here.
One person explains:
"(as a workaround) you could try to add a manual startx command to Application Autostart (in Session and Startup)."
Even I with 3 years of Ubuntu experience do not understand how exactly to do this thing?
So in general, after 3 years experience, I realized that Ubuntu community is more willing to explain everything in more detail. They are more likely to instantly give you some commands.
2. Lubuntu 18.04 is very stable.
I installed it in 2018 and had no issues. Once you configure everything, it is smooth and crisp forever! As I just installed it on my new machine (6th generation Intel, 8 GB RAM), I am planning to use it for at least 10 years!
3. More of "snap feel"
Lubuntu is written in C, and its LXDE is based on GTK-2 graphical toolkit, which is also written in C. C is the language which is closest to the CPU – one of the lowest levels languages. The more software written in C, the more "snap feel" there is. The more software is declared "lightweight", the more "snap feel" there is. Lubuntu 18.04 LXDE environment uses the least amount of memory of all Linux desktop environments. The next Lubuntu 19 uses another environment LXQt, which is based on Qt graphical toolkit, which is written in C++, a slightly higher level language than C – some less of the "snap feel" is expected.
In general, Lubuntu 18.04 is the best thing open source community ever created! Thank you, Julian Lavergne, who created Lubuntu! Thank you, LXDE team! Thank you, Mark Shuttleworth, the CEO of Canonical, who started this Ubuntu thing! You make people happy!
