What to eat in Lithuania for Americans?

Planning to visit Lithuania? Here are some best tips:

Which cities to visit in Lithuania?
Vilnius it is the biggest, most vibrant, most international and the most cool. You can just explore everything, eat at restaurants, go to clubs, enjoy water amusement park, find cool sights – everything is mostly in the walking distance. However, after 4 days you might get bored, so try some other nearby cities with sceneries, like Trakai (25 miles away). You can also visit a remote SPA town Druskininkai (80 miles away). In summer you can visit Palanga (206 miles away) – a seaside town with a nightlife, also some smaller seaside towns with sceneries – Nida (an upscale resort for riches, 220 miles away) or Šventoji (213 miles away, known for wide sandy beach and a great safety at night).

Where to buy groceries in Lithuania?
RIMI and IKI are the most western and the most nicely looking grocery store chains. MAXIMA offers the widest choice, however, it is often crowded. NORFA and LIDL offer a nice value for money.

What to eat for breakfast in Lithuania?
  • Mantinga triangle sandwiches. You can find them in most supermarkets.

What to order in a restaurant in Lithuania?
In any eating place it is best to order steaks (Lithuanian "Kepsnys"), also dishes from chicken or pizzas – you will get the least amount of unwanted surprises if you order them.
However, in Lithuania sometimes they serve dishes with mushroom dressings or pizzas with mushrooms – it might look weird. Before ordering, ask whether it includes mushrooms or not, also you can ask a waiter not to add the sauce (sometimes it contains mushrooms), or you may ask for a ketchup instead.

Which local food would you recommend to try?
  • Barbecue thing "shashleek" ("šašlykai").
  • Curd (cheese) pancakes ("varskeciai" or "varskes blynai"). In this video one American tried them in Latvia.
  • Potato pancakes ("bulviniai blynai")
  • Boiled curd dumplings ("varskes virtinukai")
  • A nice snack: fried bread with cheese sauce ("kepta duona su surio padazu") – the most popular among foreigners
  • A nice appetizer: cold beetroot soup ("saltibarsciai").
For all other local dishes, like "cepelinai", "bulviu plokstainis" (potato pie) I would suggest ordering a half portion first – this food is very unusual for Americans.

What to drink in Lithuania?
You can find Coca Cola or Sprite everywhere. Local mineral water brands are also good – the best ones are Tiche, Akvile, Neptunas. Neptunas is owned by Coca Cola.
